Liebster Award

Today is a special day.  Hello, handbag has been nominated for a Liebster award by Kristin at Sunshine State of Style.  How wonderful to receive this from a fellow fashion blogger!

The Liebster award helps raise awareness of up-and-coming blogs.  The rules are:
- Nominees must answer the 11 questions provided by the nominator
- Choose 11 of your favorite blogs (with under 200 followers) to be nominated
- Make up 11 new questions for the bloggers
- Let the nominees know they have been tagged/nominated
- You cannot tag back or tag the same person

This blog post has two parts.  The first is about me, the second is about the bloggers I'm nominating.

About me (my answers to Kristens questions):

1. What made you want to start a blog about fashion?
Ive had a love of handbags for as long as I can remember.  When I was very young my mom gave me a beautiful green leather purse.  I promptly wrote my name all over it.  That might have been where it started.
During the day, I work to save the world.  Im aware of the contradiction between wanting to save the world and having a love of luxury items like handbags, but I cant kick it.  Hello, handbag is an outlet for that part of my psyche.

2. What is your favorite item in your closet?
My family bought me a beautiful Marc by Marc Jacobs Dr. Q Groovee Satchel as a graduation gift.  The bag itself is to die for, but it means something more special.

3.  If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
I aspire to be vegan.  I accomplished it for about six months, but Im not disciplined enough to keep it up.  My main problem an almost unbelievable love of chicken wings - I try to get free range, local, grass fed, antibiotic free chicken wings when I can.  That said, Veggie Grill has some darn good chickin wings.  I could eat those every day for the rest of my life.

4. What do you think is the worst trend that has ever happened?
Trends change so quickly, thats hard to say.  I really dislike the studs look on bags, if that could go away I would be happy.

5. Favorite animal and why?
Elephants.  Elephants symbolize strength, protection, loyalty, happiness and good luck.  They are also incredibly beautiful creatures.  I spent some time volunteering in Africa, and fell in love with the elephants at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.  I am the proud adoptive mom of Quanza, a two year old calf who lost her parents to poaching.  Poaching is one of the most ridiculous problems we face as a society, and Im hell-bent on getting it stopped.

6. Where is your favorite place to shop?
I prefer to support social enterprises, so my first choice is usually Etsy or Roozt.  Of course, though, Im always pulled to luxury.  I tend to go places where I can compare several brands.  I can spend many happy hours at Nordstrom in the handbags.

7. If you had unlimited funds, what are the top 3 things that you would buy?
A Prius
A social enterprise company focused on teaching underserved women how to make beautiful bags.

8.  Who is your current celebrity crush?
Kristen Davis from Sex and the City. She has just the most beautiful style, and she gives back in so many ways. When I found out she saved an elephant in Kenya I may have swooned.

9. If you could shop in the closet of any blogger, who would it be?
Corporette.  Shes has incredible taste and manages the work/life style balance so well.

10. What is your dream job?
Im inspired by people choosing to spend money in a way that creates positive social change.  If Im not running my own business,  Id love to manage the corporate social responsibility department somewhere like Nordstrom or Kate Spade.

11. What is your biggest accomplishment in life so far?
I'm very proud of my two rescued dogs. They came from tough backgrounds - the big one has epilepsy, and the little one was born in the shelter.  They have both become sweet, well behaved, all around incredible dogs. And I'm very proud to have taught the little one to sit, lay down, stand up, and play dead. Maybe one day she'll learn to be a therapy dog.

Nominees:

Id like to nominate this incredible group of bloggers for their outstanding coverage of fashion:

  1. Its Vicki with an I - Vicki has put together incredible content in a short amount of time, and has great sense of color.
  2. Fashion by Brandi - Brandi has a glorious collection of handbags that she pairs beautifully with her outfits.  And I love her sense of philanthropy, like in her Give a Little post.
  3. A Style Soiree - Christie attends so many events, shes always on the up and up.  With a revamped website A Style Soiree is a must watch.
  4. Rock that Frock - Laura has a talent for creating multiple outfits with the same pieces.  I especially love How to Get More Out of Your Work Wear.
  5. StyleLogical - Alexis calls it like it is.  And I appreciate the refreshing, non-cookie-cutter Hello World post.
  6. Couleur de Rose - I love Sonyas writing style.  Shes authentic and informal, and she writes great reviews.
  7. Classy Sassy and a bit Smart Assy - Natashas blog has a little of everything... nail polish, how-tos, outfit of the day, you never know what youre going to get but its always worth a look.
  8. Rio the Dreamcatcher - Olivia puts together outfits I would actually wear.
  9. Savagem - Gemma finds beautiful pieces in unexpected places, and more often than not theyre sustainable.
  10. Anthony is a Groupie Incognito - Anthony has a fresh style, and has a knack for new mens trends.
  11. Tea for Shoe - This is unconventional as Heidi is quite new to blogging, but she clearly has a talent for this.  I cant wait to see where she goes.
